Bad hires cost you time and money. When you hire a new employee, you need them to be what you were expecting for the job position but, for one reason or another, they aren’t.
Avoiding this situation entirely is more challenging than you might think. Here are some tips to help you make the right hire the first time.
Job Description
It all starts with the job description. Put time and effort into creating a job description that accurately reflects the duties of the role and clearly lays out the expectations. This will attract highly qualified applicants.
A job description that is too vague and unclear will lead to unqualified candidates applying. This results in time wasted, having to sort through unqualified applicants, and potentially having had hired an unqualified applicant.
Don’t simply copy a job description you find online. The job description you find online may not accurately reflect the role you’re hiring for. Each role at your company is unique, and you should treat it as so.
Reviewing Applicants Takes Time
To hire a new employee the right way, you must devote the time and energy required. You can’t simply breeze through resumes, spend a few minutes in an interview and expect to hire the right qualified employee.
Each candidate requires research. This includes:
- Pre-screen
- Background checks
- Reference check
- In-depth interviews
- Talent assessments
There is no set time frame for an interview. It should last as needed to last for you to get accurate information. You need to understand the applicants performance in past roles, their salary, ask hypothetical questions, and be on the lookout for red flags.
Reviewing applications isn’t necessarily over after the interview. Once you’ve narrowed down your list of applicants, you may want to give talent assessments. An assessment won’t guarantee they are the right choice, but it will help you narrow down the candidates in the running.
Be Realistic
Part of hiring is being realistic. Purple unicorns don’t exist so don’t expect to find one. But you should also know what the key components of the role are and what you’re willing to be somewhat flexible on.
Take your time and don’t rush. You don’t want to make a fast hire that leads to hiring the wrong person. It’s better to take your time than to simply hire the first applicant just to have someone in the role.
