When to Terminate an Employee

As the employer, you have to make the difficult decision of when to terminate an employee who no longer serves you or your company’s needs. Below are some warning signs of when to terminate an employee.

Bad Behavior

Your company has rules. Those rules are in place to make sure employees do their job professionally, both in their interaction with clients and with colleagues.

Sometimes employees have poor tempers and can act unprofessionally. When you see these actions, you must respond immediately. Have discussions with them to correct their behavior. You document these interactions and nothing changes. If you have provided several opportunities for the employee to correct their behavior and they have not done so, it’s time to cut ties.

Productivity Suffers

Every team relies on multiple people to complete projects. Your problem employees might hinder productivity by constantly missing deadlines. Not only does this delay projects and frustrate colleagues and clients, but morale will take a hit too.

If other employees see the poor behavior continue without consequences, employees will become complacent and office work suffers as a result.

Knowing when to take corrective action will increase team morale.

Passiveness Persists

Problem employees don’t care about their work. They don’t care about the clients. They don’t care about the team. Employees with this attitude are a nucleus of negativity.

If you’ve taken action to correct this behavior and the employee doesn’t respond properly, it’s time to move on. You can find an employee who doesn’t negatively impact your company.

When You Know, You Know

As an employer, you have a natural hunch that tells you whether an employee is working out or not. Most likely, others around can make this assessment as well.

Delaying an employee termination only serves to further frustrate your existing employees. They deserve to have a team around them who works as hard as they do, with a positive attitude and work effort.
